FIND AN EXIT FROM A PLATFORM
We'll consider the two sections of the station separately. See the Change Platforms section for details of moving between the two sections.
The platforms are numbered 1 to 15 from east to west. (see the General Description Page for more details).
Since platform usage in this station is subject to variation, we suggest you ask someone which platform you're on as you arrive. The doors will open on your left on odd number platforms or right on even numbers, as you face the front of the train.
This station is now gated, except for platforms 1 - 2 which may be guarded by removable barriers when no train is boarding. See our Detailed Description of the main concourse for details.
There are four gate lines across the other platforms, as follows: 3 - 6, 7 - 8, 9 - 10 and 11 - 15. Although there is room to move between these groups of platforms inside the gates, we suggest you use the gates opposite the platforms you want, this could be easier and safer.
At the time of our survey, March 2013, there was tactile paving along the edges of platforms 1 - 4 and 11 - 15. Tactile paving will be installed on the remaining platforms during the ongoing refurbishment of this station.
There are three exits to street level from the main concourse:
A single island platform runs east/west with platform 16, eastbound lying north of platform 17, westbound. The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train. There is no tactile paving along either edge of the platform.
There is stairs and lift access between the platforms and the intermediate level. There is stairs, escalator and lift access between the intermediate level and the low level concourse.
We consider three exits to this section: the low level exit Hope Street, the Argyle Street North and Argyle Street South exits.
There's level access to the Hope Street and Argile Street North exits from the low level concourse and stairs-only access to the Argyle Street South exit from the intermediate level.
This section of the station is gated at the intermediate level. There are three gate lines: from the east passage to the foot of the escalators, from the west passage to the foot of the escalators and from the east passage to the Argyle Street South exit. Note that there's a Wide Aisle Gate at the west passage and Argyle Street South exit, but not at the other exit via the east passage. See our Detailed Description of the intermediate level for more details.
As this is a terminus station, you continue beyond the front of the trains.
The Virgin, Cross Country and East Coast services will normally arrive at the lower numbered platforms (1 - 5), whilst the higher numbered platforms are served by local, Scotrail services.
Since the ends of the platforms aren't in line, (see our Detailed Description of the Concourse page for details), we suggest you go through the nearest gate line before attempting to turn right. Note that platforms 1 - 2 are not gated and there's a more complex route from platforms 11 - 15, see below.
Having gone through the gates into the concourse, it may be easier to move to either side, since this large area is strewn with various obstacles.
We therefore suggest you follow the left-hand side for the Hope Street exit and the right-hand side for Union Street. The main exit into Gordon Street is opposite tracks 2 - 3 and there is usually a clear walkway through the concourse along this line.
GO TO END
Platform 15 runs along the left-hand side of the station, whilst platforms 13 - 14 are off the vehicle turning circle. Tracks 12 - 15 end before track 11. There's an L-shaped gate line across platform 11 which is divided into two sections. the one across the end of the platform leads straight into the concourse, whilst from the left-hand section, you'd turn right for the concourse or left for the low level section of the station.
Go to the end of the platform. The lift to the low level is in front of you. Turn right and continue, across the turning circle, towards platform 11. If you find tactile paving, you're approaching track 13, move left beyond the end of this before continuing forwards.
Continue beyond the end of track 13, to your right, then turn right past the ends of tracks 13 and 12, onto platform 11.
Having reached platform 11, turn left for the gate line. The left-hand gates in each section are normally the ones you need.
GO TO END
Rather than struggle through the main concourse, we suggest it would be easier to go out through either of the Argyle Street exits or the low level Hope Street exit.
We believe the rear of westbound, or front of eastbound trains is beyond the east steps, whilst the west steps are about in the middle of the trains.
From the rear of the eastbound train, go towards the front (east); from the front of the westbound train, go towards the rear.
The steps are in the west wall of the building, going up away from the front of westbound trains. Go up two flights of steps, turn left, take the turning right and continue forward to the gate line. There's a Wide Aisle gate to the left of the pillar and the exit gates are immediately to your right of the pillar. Go through the gates and continue to the foot of the escalators. The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to the low level concourse and turn right. From here, you can continue (south) onto Argyle Street, or turn right again (west) beyond the downward escalator and continue into Hope Street.
GO TO END
If you wish to continue up the stairs, turn right at the foot of the escalators, go up a flight of steps, turn left (180 degrees), go up another flight of steps into the low level concourse. Turn right (east) and right again (south) towards Argyle Street, or left (west) toward Hope Street.
GO TO END
The east steps are in the near (west) wall of the building beyond the trains. Go up two flights of steps to the intermediate level. From here, you can turn right towards Argyle Street South, or left for the other exits.
Turn right at the top of the steps, the gate line is in front of you with a Wide Aisle Gate at the left-hand end and a regular exit to your right of this. Go through the gates and continue up the steps in front of you. Turn left (180 degrees) then continue up another flight of steps, over a slight lip in the floor, into Argyle Street.
GO TO END
Note, there is no Wide Aisle Gate in this gate line.
Turn left at the top of the steps. The gate line is in front of you, the left-hand gates are normally the ones you need, go through the gates.
From here, you can continue to the wall in front of you then turn right for the escalator or turn right and continue to the foot of the steps on your right then turn right again.
The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to the low level concourse and turn right. From here, you can continue into Argyle Street, or turn right beyond the downward escalator and continue into Hope Street.
GO TO END
Go up a flight of steps, turn left (180 degrees) then go up another flight into the low level concourse. From here, you can turn right then take the turning right and continue into Argyle Street or turn left and continue into Hope Street.
GO TO END
If you're using the lift the door is in the west side of the building between the two sets of steps. The call button is to your left of the door and there are clear verbal instructions. At the top, (intermediate level) you come out through the same (west) door, turn right, turn right again at the corner and locate the lift door on the left-hand side of the passage.
The call button is to your left and there are clear, verbal instructions. You can either get out at the low level or in the main station, at the beginning of platform 15. Unless you need to go through the main concourse, we suggest you get out at the low level concourse, turn right (west) towards Hope Street, or left (east) then right (south) towards Argyle Street.
