Find a platform from an entrance
We'll consider the two sections of the station separately. See the Change Platforms section for details of moving between the two sections.
The Main Station
The platforms are numbered 1 to 15 from east to west. (see the General Description Page for more details).
This station is now gated, except for platforms 1 - 2 which may be guarded by removable barriers when no train is boarding. See our Detailed Description of the main concourse for more details.
There are four gate lines across the other platforms, as follows: 3 - 6, 7 - 8, 9 - 10 and 11 - 15. Although there is room to move between these groups of platforms inside the gates, we suggest you use the gates opposite the platforms you want, this could be easier and safer.
At the time of our survey, March 2013, there was tactile paving along the edges of platforms 1 - 4 and 11 - 15. Tactile paving will be installed on the remaining platforms during the ongoing refurbishment of this station.
There are three entrances from street level into the main concourse:
- The main entrance, from Gordon Street - you go up the slope, crossing two sets of tactile matting. You enter facing the platforms, tracks 2 and 3 are in front of you.
- From Hope Street - you go up the slope, crossing one set of tactile matting. Enter the concourse and turn right to face the platforms, platform 8 is in front of you.
- From Union Street - you go up two flights of steps. Enter the concourse and turn left, track 1 is in front of you.
The Low Level Station
A single island platform runs east/west with platform 16, eastbound lying north of platform 17, westbound. There is no tactile paving along either edge of the platform.
There is stairs and lift access between the platforms and the intermediate level. There is stairs, escalator and lift access between the intermediate level and the low level concourse.
We consider three entrances to this section: the low level entrance from Hope Street, the Argyle Street North and Argyle Street South entrances.
There's level access from the Hope Street and Argile Street North entrances into the low level concourse and stairs-only access from the Argyle Street South entrance into the intermediate level.
This section of the station is gated at the intermediate level. There are three gate lines: from the foot of the escalators to the east passage, from the foot of the escalators to the west passage and from the Argyle Street South entrance to the east passage. Note that there's a Wide Aisle Gate at the west passage and Argyle Street South entrances, but not at the other entrance via the east passage. See our Detailed Description of the intermediate level for more details.
In the Main Station
To Which Platform?
To Platforms 1 - 10
Go to the left-hand (east) side of the concourse, turn right and continue to the wall in front of you. This is the end of track 1 Turn right, passing platforms 1 - 2, platforms 3 - 4, West Cornwall Pasty Co. and platforms 5 - 6. Beyond here is a building housing Upper Crust. Turn left, continue to the gate line then turn right across platforms 7 - 8. The end of track 8 is about four metres left of that of track 7.
As you continue from here, you return to the tiled surface of the concourse, whose left-hand side has retreated considerably, a building housing Franco's Italian Cuisine is in front of you to your left. Turn left, passing two rows of pay phones on your left, this brings you to the gate line for platforms 9 - 10.
GO TO END
Platforms 11 - 15
Move to the right-hand (west) side of the concourse and follow this beyond the shops. The building front veers right (southwest) beyond WH Smith. Continue beyond the Transport Police building. If you bear left (about 11 o'clock) from here, you should reach the gate line for platforms 11 - 15. Platform 11 - 12 is an island platform with the gate line around the near right-hand corner. Go through the gates.
For platforms 13 - 15, continue beyond the gate line to your right then turn right behind the escalator well. You're now at the edge of the vehicle turning circle, move forwards a couple of metres then turn left for the island platform 13 - 14. If you find a barrier or low wall in front of you, you're at the end of tracks 12 - 13, move right then continue onto the platform.
For platform 15, continue across the turning circle, to the wall in front of you then turn left onto the platform, which runs along the right-hand wall of the station.

In the Low Level Station
From the Low Level Hope Street Entrance
Continue east into the concourse.
- the lift is in a recess to your left, followed by the steps and escalators from the main concourse,the ticket sales windows are beyond these;
- the steps down are to your right, opposite the ticket sales windows;
- the escalators are beyond the ticket sales windows, follow the barrier round and turn left (180 degrees), the downward escalator is in front of you.
From the Argyle Street North Entrance
Continue (north) into the concourse.
- the escalators are on the opposite side of the concourse, follow the right-hand wall to the corner and turn left. The escalators are in front of you, the downward one is to your left.
- the steps down leave from the near (south) side of the concourse. Follow the left-hand wall round to your left, into the recess, the steps are in front of you, opposite the ticket sales windows;
- the lift is on the opposite (north) side of the concourse. Turn left and continue, past the recess to the steps (on your left), and the foot of the escalators and steps to the main concourse (on your right) and locate the lift in the next recess.
From the Argyle Street South Entrance
As this gives stairs-only access to the intermediate level, we assume you'll want to continue down the east steps onto the platforms.
You go down a flight of steps, turn right (180 degrees) then go down another flight of steps to the intermediate level. The gate line is in front of you with the Wide Aisle Gate at the right-hand end and the automatic entrance at the left, go through the gates. Take the turning left and go down two flights of steps to platform level.
Platform 16, eastbound is to your right, whilst platform 17, westbound is to your left. We believe you're beyond the train here, so suggest you continue forward for a few metres along the platform.

To the Platforms
Via the Steps
Go down a flight of steps, turn right (180 degrees) and down another flight to the intermediate level.
There are two sets of steps between here and the island platform 16 and 17. At the time of our survey, the first (east) steps were behind the westbound and before the front of the eastbound train. As the signage didn't indicate which of these sets of steps was entrance or exit, we suggest you take the second (west) steps.
From the foot of the steps, go forward about two metres and turn left. The gate line is in front of you with the entrance gates at the left-hand end an the Wide Aisle Gate beyond the pillar at the right-hand end of the gate line. Go through the gates, into the west passage. Continue to the corner, turn left and take the turning right, down two flights of steps onto the platform. Platform 16, eastbound is to your right, whilst platform 17, westbound is to your left. We believe you're about in the middle of the train.
GO TO END
Via the Escalator
Continue forward from the foot of the escalator towards the west passage.
GO TO END
Via the Lifst
Leave the lift at the intermediate level, turn right, continue to the end then turn left. Take the turning left and locate the lift in front of you. Go down to platform level and leave via the same door, facing west. Platform 16, eastbound is to your right, we believe you're beside the front half of the eastbound, or rear half of the westbound train.
