This is a through station on the line between Glasgow Central and Carlisle via Dumfries and on the line between Glasgow Central and Ayr.
For the purposes of this guide, we assume that the tracks run approximately north/south through the station, between platform 4 (along the east side of the station) and platform 3.
There are two bay platforms, 1 and 2 to the west of platform 3. The northern section of platform 3 shares an island platform with platform 2, whilst platform 1 is a separate platform along the west side of the station.
A subway, about in the middle of platform 3 and near the south end of platform 4, provides stairs access between platforms and street level.
The ticket office lies about 15 metres south of the beginning of platforms 1 - 2. We'll call the area between the building and the beginning of these platforms the concourse. The concourse is bounded to the east by platform 3 and to the west by the station building which includes the waiting room.
The steps to the subway are just east of the ticket office.
There is stairs access through this station, though there is step-free access to platforms 1 - 3. We therefore believe the station is accessible to Guide Dog users, though only platforms 1 - 3 could be accessible to wheelchairs.
