DESCRIBE ONLINE

Location

The station is located immediately southwest of the Y-junction where the line from Glasgow Central divides. The line to Ayr and Stranraer continues virtually southwest, lying southeast of the line towards Troon, Ardrossan and Largs. For convenience, we'll consider the orientation of these lines as northeast/southwest, though they continue to diverge away from the junction.

Byres Road leads northwest, past McGavin Way (northeast), along the southeast side of the station. Townhead continues (northwest) across the tracks to Ayr, beyond which Penyburn Road leaves (southwest) and the access road to the station forecourt, which we believe to be Station Road, leads northeast. Beyond this, Townhead crosses the tracks to Ardrossan, beyond which Ashgrove Road leads northeast into the car park along the northwest side of the station.

The station building is on the northeast side of a forecourt which includes an extensive car park. At the time of our survey, we found references to "Station Car Park" relating to this and the car park along the northwest side of the station. We'll therefore refer to the main car park, in the forecourt, as the central car park and the other one as the northwest car park.

Entrances and Exits

There are three entrances/exits to this station:

The Main Entrance, Via Station Road and the Forecourt

There is car parking to each side of Station Road, which has pavement to each side, though we think the pavement along the right-hand (southeast) side is better. We'll call these sections of the car park, the southeast and northwest sections.

As you continue (northeast) you pass steps leading down southeast towards the British Transport Police building - you go down seven steps, going southeast into the southeast section of the car park. The pavement continues (northeast) beyond the top of these steps, to the entrance/exit road to the southeast section of the car park, beyond which is the pavement outside the station building.

The narrower pavement, along the left-hand (northwest) side of Station Road leads to the entrance/exit road to the northwest section of the car park. Beyond this is a large gap, across the taxi rank, before you reach the pavement outside the station building.

There's a vehicle turning circle at the northeast end of Station Road.

From Ashgrove Road and the Northwest Car Park onto Platform 1

Continuing northwest on the northeast side of Townhead from Station Road:

Ashgrove Road, blocked by bollards from Townhead

Turning Northeast on Ashgrove Road, following the wall on your right, you go down the slope, after a short distance, there’s a low rail to each side, turn right at the end, onto platform 1, about 30 metres northeast of the beginning.

Leaving platform 1, going northwest into the northwest car park, there are three disabled persons parking bays beside the entrance to the platform. There’s a drop-off point northeast of these. Vehicle access is via the northeast end of Ashgrove Road, beyond the scope of this survey.

From McGavin Way onto Platform 4.

McGavin Way leads northeast just southeast of the bridge over the tracks to Ayr. Follow the left-hand side and continue (northeast) along the path towards platform 4.

Continue, Northeast down a steep slope, there's a hand rail on the left-hand (northwest) side. This path brings you onto the southwest end of platform 4, beside (southeast of) the slope off the end of the platform.
