Special Notice

4 July 2011

The redevelopment of this station continues. Our thanks go to Paul David of Wembley for the following:

Kings Cross is not an easy place to travel through at the moment, as I find on my daily commute.

Ticket barriers have been installed from platforms 0-5, forcing everyone to one corner of the cramped concourse to enter and exit these platforms. My train normally arrives on platform 5, and I sometimes manage to persuade the staff to let me through the side gate so that I can avoid the gates and the walk of death across the concourse towards the steps down to the passage connecting the North and South ticket halls. The situation has been slightly eased by the creation of a walk way right in front of the indicator boards, with a waste high cordon marking the outer edge.

I believe platform 7 is still in use, number 6 certainly is, as are 0-5. Platform 8 on the other hand is very much out of action. Anyone trying to access the suburban station (platforms 9-11) from the main concourse may want to consider using the connecting passage to the Northern ticket hall , locate the steps up and then turn right towards the suburban station.

The usual route along platform 8 is now quite a challenge, with a right turn on to boards over the running line (at platform level of course), and then a series of turns eventually leading to the ticket gates. To add to the fun, there is normally an army of people with wheelie cases waiting for you at every turn, travelling at high speed. The constant noise of drilling coming from the roof is also an unwanted distraction.

I will do my best to add updates as things change at Kings Cross. The new concourse on the side of the station can't come soon enough.

Paul
