Describe Online

Location

The station is in a cutting (east/west) under Deans East Road (north/south), between Newyear Field on the south side and Nether Dechton on the north.

Raeburnrigg Road runs west from the Carmondean Roundabout to the north and Houston Road leads west to the south. The station itself extends west from under the road bridge.

There are two car parks adjacent to the station. The south car park, which can be reached via Houston Road, is at platform level, whilst the north car park lies south and east of an industrial estate which can be reached via Reaburnrigg Road. This car park is at an intermediate level between platform 1 and Deans East Road.

Entrances and Exits

There are three entrances/exits to this station, excluding the complex paths on each side of the station between each car park and Deans East Road.

Level Access from the South Car Park onto Platform 2, Westbound

There are bollards in the gap between the car park and the platform. The entrance/exit is near the east end of the platform, that is near or even behind the rear of the trains.

See the Local Features section for details of the paths between this car park and Deans East Road.

Steps from the North Car Park onto Platform 1, Eastbound

The top of the steps leads from the south side of the car park, a few metres west of the top of the ramp.

You go down seven, seven, then seven steps going south, turn right then down seven steps going west, turn left and down three steps, going south, then left and down seven steps, going east to platform level. There's tactile paving at the foot of the steps. Turn right onto the platform, near the west end. We believe you're near or behind the rear of the trains.

The Ramp from the North Car Park onto Platform 1, Eastbound.

This is a complex route, though you can simply follow the path down to the platform. There's a hand rail to each side.

The path leaves the south side of the car park, going south. Turn right (west), left (180 degrees, east), right (south), left (east), right (180 degrees, west), right (north), left (west), left (south), right (west), left (180 degrees, east), right (180 degrees, west) to platform level, then turn left (south) onto the platform. You're near the east end of the platform, near or behind the rear of the trains.

Local Road Crossings

Deans East Road is a major road, though there's a path to each side of the station from which there is stairs and ramp access to each side of the road. See the Local Features section for details.

Local Features

The Path from Deans East Road to the North Car Park

This path leaves the west side of Deans East Road, a few metres north of the rail bridge.

Turn left (south), right (180 degrees, north), then left (180 degrees, south). Continue, down the slope into the car park. Turn right at the fence in front of you then take the first turning left for the ramp towards platform 1.

The North Car Park

We understand there are 270 parking spaces, including four disabled persons' bays available at this station.

The north car park lies to the south and east of an industrial estate, details of which lie beyond the scope of this survey. There's a pay phone on the wall of the building near the southwest corner of this space.

The North Rail Path

This path leads from the Carmondean Centre in the west to Knightsridge and Eliburn in the east, passing through the north car park then under Deans East Road.

There is stepped and ramp access to each side of the road from this path. You go down a steep slope leading east from the car park, then under Deans East Road. Note that you can turn left before the top of this slope then right for the ramp onto the west side of the road.

As you continue, down the slope, you pass steps, leading north onto the west side. The slope levels out under the main bridge before you reach steps leading north onto the east side of the road. Continue, under the second bridge before taking the left turn then left again (west) towards the east side of the road, a few metres north of the steps.

The Steps

These steps have a central rail, but no hand rail to either side.

If you use the west steps, you go up 14 then 11 steps, going north then turn right onto the west side of the road.

If you use the east steps, you go up 13 then 13 steps and a steep slope, going north then turn left onto the east side of the road.

The South Car Park

This area lies south of platform 2 with housing to the south and west sides, beyond the scope of this survey. The ramp, plus two sets of steps towards the west side of Deans East Road are near the northeast corner of this car park.

The Ramp

We consider this in two sections, the ramp from the car park onto the west side of Deans East Road and what we'll call the south path, which leads east under the bridge, giving stepped access to each side of the road plus ramp access to the east.

The ramp follows a complicated route with the south path leaving at an intermediate level, if you find yourself under the bridge and wanted to go straight up to the road, we suggest you turn back, take the turning left and continue up that path to road level.

The Ramp

From platform 2, leave the platform, going south into the car park then turn left (east). Go up the slope, there are railings and a hand rail to each side, turn left (north) then immediately right (east).

Continue up the slope, turn right (south) then right again (west). Turn left (south) then left again (east).

Turn left (north) then almost immediately right (east). From here, the south path continues east.

Turn right (south), then right (west). Turn left (south) then left (east). Turn right (south) then right (west). Turn left (south) then left (east) and continue up to the road.

As you approach the road, you pass the north steps from the car park then steps down to the south path to your left, whilst the turning right leads south to the housing area, beyond the scope of this survey. Note that the south steps from the car park are on the west side of this path, a few metres from the main ramp.

The South Path

Continue east, down the slope, you pass steps to your right (south) to the west pavement. Continue under the main bridge, then pass steps up to your right (south) onto the east side of the road.

The path continues under the second bridge, up the slope. After some distance the path turns right (south) then right again (west) up to the east side of the road, just south of the top of the steps.

Each set of steps between the south path and Deans East Road has a central rail, but no hand rail to either side.

If you take the west steps, you go up 14 then ten steps, going south onto the west side of the road. there's a rail along the east side of the pavement, turn left (180 degrees, north) and continue beyond the rail bridge, for the bus stop.

If you take the east steps, you go up 14 then eight steps, going south to pavement level. There's a rail along the right-hand (west) side of the pavement which continues to the bus stop.

The Steps to Deans East Road

The South Steps

From the east side of the car park, you can go up six then six steps, going north, turn right (east), up seven then six steps, going east. onto the path leading south into the housing. There's tactile paving at the top and bottom of these steps.

The North Steps

From the northeast corner of the car park, you go up six steps, going east, turn left (north), go up seven steps going north. Turn right (east) then right (south) and go up five then six steps, going south. We're now at the north side of the path from the road.
