The station is bounded to the west by London Road, running north/south; to the north by Ducie Street (east); to the east by Sheffield Street (south from Ducie Street) and to the south by Fairfield Street (northwest/southeasst).
Between the junction of London Road and Fairfield Street is a forecourt, south of the station, containing the short stay car park and taxi rank.
The main entrance is at the top of the station approach. You enter via automatic doors. There are two sets of doors with tactile matting between. At the time of our survey, the inner set was open.
Having gone through the inner set of doors, turn right and go through another set of automatic doors into the northwest corner of the concourse, at platform level.
This entrance is on the south side of the car park, you enter through two sets of automatic doors, going south into the northeast corner of the concourse, adjacent to the gate to platform 1.
Note that Station Reception is to your right as you go through the lobby between these sets of doors.
The recognised London Road entrance brings you into the west side of the Fairfield Street Level 0 concourse, behind the foot of the steps down from the Metro Link level. Note that the automatic doors on this entrance open outwards, rather than being conventional sliding doors.
An alternative exit to London Road leaves from the arrivals platform of the Metro Link, just beside the door to the lift beyond the west end of the platform. This brings you out a few metres north of the point where the tracks enter the station building. Note, we believe this exit is only intended for emergency or service use.
There are three entrances/exits from the forecourt, two from the level 0 concourse, the third from the east end of the departures platform of the Metro Link.
We understand this emerges onto Fairfield Street, beyond the turning circle of the Metro Link.

We noted a bridge from the long stay car park, to the top level of a multi-storey car park to the north. We understand Sheffield Street can be reached via this car park, which lies beyond the scope of our survey.
The slip road running east from this junction towards the station, serves the taxi rank, private car drop-off and short stay car park.
There are rotating cones and tactile paving at each crossing. A sounder indicates that traffic through the junction has stopped.
This is a two-stage crossing of a dual carriageway, the central island is marked with tactile paving. The posts, with push button and rotating cone are north of the crossing, i.e. to your right as you cross away from the station.
This is a single-stage crossing.
When crossing from the northeast side, the post with push button and rotating cone is to your right. On the southwest side, the pavement has been widened since the installation of the crossing, hence the tactile paving with posts, to each side, are set back some distance from the kerb.

The east end (nearer the station) of this crossing is on an island between Fairfield Street itself and a slip road for traffic turning left into London Road.
As mentioned above, Fairfield Street is divided by an island into the main road, approaching the junction and the slip road for left turning traffic into London Road.
Turn away from the station (south) to locate this crossing from the island. This is a single-stage crossing, there's a post with push button and rotating cone at each side of the crossing at each end.
As you face east from the island, towards the station. This is a two-stage crossing with the central island marked by tactile paving. There's a post with push button and rotating cone at each side of the crossing at each end.
As you move (north-ish) along the right-hand side of Fairfield Street, towards the station, you cross each end of the vehicle turning circle within the station forecourt. In doing this, you cross:
This is a two- stage crossing. As you face across London Road from either side, the post with push button and rotating cone is to your right. On the central island, the post is to your left.

As you come out of the exit from the Level 1 concourse onto London Road, turn left. After about 15 metres, you locate the bus stop on your right serving: GMPTE: 192, 196, 201, 203, 204, 205, 206, 373, N192 and N201. The local public transport information number is 0161 228 7811.
The City Link Metro is a free bus service between the bus stop outside the entrance, Piccadilly Gardens Bus Station and Chorlton Street Coach Station, along with other city destinations.
Station Approach leaves the junction of London Road, Ducie Street and Auburn Street, leading southeast, up a slight slope, curving slightly right, then left.

At the top of Station Approach is a turning circle for vehicles with the bus stop for Metro 1 and Metro 2 free buses serving the city centre, called City Link Metro Shuttle.
As you continue, past the station entrance you go behind WH Smith etc., in front of you is Piccadilly Tower, an office building housing Network Rail, Transport Police etc.
Leave the main entrance and turn right through a short tunnel, down a slight slope into the car park. There's a post box to your left of the entrance to the tunnel. If you go through the tunnel and follow the irregular shaped building round to your right, then right again through the automatic doors past station reception, into the concourse.
The long stay car park is established on one level running east beside platform 1. from the northeast corner is a bridge leading north into a multi-storey car park onto the top of three levels. We presume that you can go down steps within this facility to Sheffield Street which lies beyond the scope of this survey.
This is a triangular area bounded by the station building to the north, the turning circle of the Metro Link, to the east and Fairfield Street, to the southwest.

The slip road leading east from the junction with London Road leads to the entrance to the short stay car park (right) before veering left across the front of the station building. The road splits into two lanes, the left-hand is for taxis, drop-off and pick-up outside the east entrance; the right-hand is for private vehicles, drop-off and pick-up on the south side of an island just beyond the east entrance. The road veers south and continues to Fairfield Street.
The short stay car park occupies the central area of the forecourt, including a trolley point and disabled persons parking bays towards the north end, nearest the station.

All these crossings have tactile paving to each side, but no pedestrian control.
The pavement opens out into a broad area with the station building on your right, curving away with trees.
The pavement slopes up towards the junction with Station Approach.
