From Platform 1

The train doors will open on your left as you face the front of the train. Continue, beyond the front of the train, past the large building to your right, which is the Travel Centre, you're now on platform 2. Take the next turning right and continue into the concourse.

From Platform 2

We understand this platform is served by northbound trains which travel east through the station. The doors will open on your left as you face the front of the train.

This platform actually runs along the southern edge of the concourse, with three walkways between the platform and the concourse itself. It may be easiest to head for the middle walkway, between the bridge and the Travel Centre, as this leads you straight towards the exit. Continue into the concourse.

From Platforms 3 and 4

We understand that these platforms are served by southbound trains, which travel west through the station. Therefore, the doors will open on your left (platform 3) or right (platform 4) as you face the front of the train.

If you arrive on platform 4, go through to platform 3. You can either cross the island platform beyond either end of the building or take one of the two walkways through. The west of these leads you past the toilets, whilst the east (nearer the rear of the train) takes you past the cafe. This may be easier, as you then need to just turn left up the slope onto the bridge.

On platform 3, you're looking for either the ramp, going up west from just outside the cafe, or the steps which go up east, from a point west of the passage to the toilets.

If you take the steps, go up two flights, then turn left, otherwise, the ramp continues (west) including a short landing, turn right at the top.

Continue, over the humped span, to the landing. From here, you can turn left and go down eight steps towards platforms 9 to 12, however, to reach the exit, you continue forward down eight steps, or turn right and go down the ramp into the concourse, then turn left. continue into the concourse.

From Platforms 5 to 8

At the time of our survey, it wasn't clear which services used these platforms, so we assume there are no fixed rules as to which side of the train the doors will open. If you're on platforms 7 or 8, which occupy the southern half of this island, you need to make your way onto platforms 5 or 6, either by passing beyond the building, or using one of the two walkways between the platforms. If you took the west one, you'd turn right and continue (east) for a few metres to reach the foot of the steps. From the east walkway, you'd turn left and, after a few metres, locate the foot of the ramp which leaves to your left.

You can either leave this island platform via steps, near the east end of platform 6, or the ramp, near the west end of platform 5. If you use the steps, go up two flights onto the bridge and turn left. Otherwise, go up the ramp to the first landing, turn right and continue to the top then turn right.

Continue, (north) over the two humped spans, to the landing at the end of the bridge. From here, you can turn left and go down eight steps towards platforms 9 to 12, however, to reach the exit, you continue forward down eight steps, or turn right and go down the ramp into the concourse, then turn left. continue into the concourse.

From Platform 9

The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train. Continue, beyond the front of the train, onto platform 2. We suggest you continue, under the bridge before turning left just before the large building on the left-hand side, which is the Travel Centre, continue into the concourse.

From Platforms 10 to 12

The doors will open on your left (when arriving at platforms 10 and 12) but on your right (if you arrive at platform 11). Continue, beyond the front of the train, into the concourse. If you arrived on platform 12, continue forward beyond the building on your left, till you reach the main exit and turn left. Otherwise, turn left, continue to the wall then turn right and proceed to the exit.

Continue (north), through the exit area (north of the main concourse) and go through one of three sets of doors, in front of you onto the pavement. Move left a few metres for the taxi pick-up point, continue left, on this pavement for the bus stop for the North Sea Ferry, or cross to the island then turn left for other buses. See the Environs page for details of local buses and other features.
