Find an exit from a Platform

Describe Online

Overview

If you're happy with stairs access, we suggest that it's easier to locate the bridges or ramp to the concourse towards the north end of the platforms. These give access to the main and side entrances. The taxi pick-up point is to your right, outside the main entrance, whilst the vehicle drop-off point is outside the side entrance.

there is tactile paving along the edge of platforms 1 - 6.

For the Main Entrance

Go beyond the front of the train (platform1), or rear )platform 2) and continue past the end of the building in the middle of the platform to the steps to the west bridge. Go up two flights of steps, turn right, go up three steps and continue, down a flight of steps onto the ramp from the concourse. Use the lift to descend to the south subway, turn left from the lift and continue to the end of the passage. The lift to platform 7 and way out is at the end of the passage, facing you. From Platforms 3 - 4

This island platform contains the mainline platforms 3 - 4 and two bay platforms, 3C and 4C at the south end.

The mainline, northbound services, towards Carlisle and Glasgow will normally stop at platform 3, whilst southbound services, towards Crewe and London will normally stop at platform 4. The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train.

Note that the long trains serving these platforms can extend north of the ramp to the bridge and south of the lift.

At the time of writing, we're not sure which services use the bay platforms, however, the end of these is just south of the administration building. In the context of the following instructions, you'd continue, beside the administration building on platform 4 to locate the lift, the ramp to the north subway descends from a point north of the administration building, whilst the ramp to the concourse, rises from the middle of the platform, north of the facilities building.

For the Main Entrance

Get off the train and locate the foot of the ramp, which is north of the facilities building. You may recognise this as containing the bar and Upper Crust, from which seating extends between two glass partitions, onto each platform. Go up the ramp and continue, through the concourse, to the exit.

GO TO END

For the Side Entrance

Get off the train and locate the foot of the ramp, which is north of the facilities building. You may recognise this as containing the bar and Upper Crust, from which seating extends between two glass partitions, onto each platform. Go up the ramp and locate the steps to the east bridge to your right near the top. Go up one flight of steps and continue to the exit.

GO TO END

For the Subway Entrance

Get off the train and locate the top of the ramp, which leaves from the middle of the island platform between the two buildings. Go down the first slope, turn right (180 degrees) then go down the second slope, into the subway. Turn left and follow the right-hand side till you reach the end, then turn left, up the ramp onto platform 7. Turn right at the top and continue through the exit.

GO TO END

For the South Entrance

If you need lift access, or the closest exit to the car park, locate the lift building, which is on platform 4, beside the administration building. Use the lift to descend to the south subway, turn right from the lift and continue to the end of the passage. The lift to platform 7 and way out is at the end of the passage, facing you. Go up to platform level, leave the lift, turn left and left again to go through the exit.

GO TO END

From Platforms 5 - 6

Note that this island platform is shorter than platforms 1 - 4. Southbound services, towards Manchester, will normally stop at platform 6, whilst northbound services, will normally stop at platform 5. The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train.

For the Main Entrance

Move towards the front of the train, (platform 5, or rear on platform 6) and locate the steps to the east bridge. Go up two flights of steps, turn left and go down one flight onto the ramp from the concourse. Turn right and continue, through the concourse, to the exit.

GO TO END

For the Side Entrance

Move towards the front of the train, (platform 5, or rear on platform 6) and locate the steps to the east bridge. Go up two flights of steps, turn right and continue, through the exit.

GO TO END

For the Subway Entrance

The ramp to the north subway goes down (south) from the middle of the island platform, though there are no buildings on this platform to help you find it. You may be able to distinguish the railings beside the ramp on each platform, amongst the various pillars, seats and flower beds.

Go down the ramp, turn left and follow the right-hand side of the passage till you reach the end. Turn left, up the ramp onto platform 7 and turn right, through the exit.

GO TO END

For the South Entrance

If you need lift access, or the closest exit to the car park, go towards the rear of the train (platform 5, or front on platform 6) and locate the lift building, which is beyond (south of) the ramp to the north subway. Use the lift to descend to the south subway, turn left from the lift and continue to the end of the passage. The lift to platform 7 and way out is at the end of the passage, facing you. Go up to platform level, leave the lift, turn left and left again to go through the exit.

GO TO END

From Platform 7

At the time of writing, we're not sure which services use this platform, which runs along the east side of the station building. The subway and south entrances leave directly from the platform, towards the south end, whilst the route to the main and side entrances is via the east bridge. Note that it is possible to go beyond the steps to the bridge, though this area didn't appear to be regularly used at the time of our survey. There is, however, a vacant track bed to the east of the platform at this point.

For the Main Entrance

Move towards the north of the train and locate the steps to the east bridge. Go up two flights of steps, turn left and go down one flight onto the ramp from the concourse. Turn right and continue, through the concourse, to the exit.

GO TO END

For the Side Entrance

Move towards the north of the train and locate the steps to the east bridge. Go up two flights of steps, turn right and continue, through the exit.
