Describe Online

Overview

The platforms in this station are divided into four groups: The Eurostar, First Capital Connect, Midland Mainline and High Speed 1.

The Eurostar platforms are in a restricted area. To reach this you must check in, go through Security and Passport controls. To leave this area, you must go through Security and Customs. Although we'll include basic instructions/directions in this guide, all customers with special needs are provided with assistance and there should be no need for you to negotiate this area independently.

The First Capital Connect platforms are at Level -2. To reach these, you must go through the gates in the northwest corner of the Level 0 Concourse, then down to the platforms via stairs, escalators or lift. Similarly, to leave these, you must go to Level 0 via escalator, lift or stairs then through the gates in the northwest corner of the Level 0 Concourse.

The Midland Mainline platforms extend north from the northwest corner of the Level 1 Concourse. There are now gates protecting these platforms, in general the left-hand gates are normally the ones you need. We suggest that the easiest way to reach these from the Level 0 Concourse is via the north escalator or north lift. Similarly, we suggest that the easiest way to reach the Level 0 Concourse is via the escalator just beyond (south of) the beginning of the platforms, or via the north lift, which is just beyond this escalator.

The High Speed 1 platforms extend north from the northeast corner of the Level 1 Concourse. These are in a separate area, bounded by the Eurostar section. These platforms can only be reached from near the northeast entrance of the Level 0 Concourse, via lift, escalators or stairs. Note that the lift also goes to Level -1 and that there are escalators and stairs between Level 0 and Level -1 in this area.

Although we've treated the Underground station as an entrance/exit in other pages of this guide, we'll include links to relevant pages within this section so you can follow the route between mainline and Underground platforms.

From the London Underground Station

You can either make your way from the Underground platform to Level 0 of the Western Concourse or leave via the new Northern Concourse and take the passage at Level -1 towards the lift, escalators or stairs. We recommend the Northern Concourse route if you want the High Speed 1 service as you can go straight to Level 1 via the lift. The escalator and stairs between these levels are also very convenient.

To Which Platform?

  To the Eurostar Platforms
To First Capital Connect
To the High Speed 1
To the Midland Mainline
To the Eurostar Platforms

We'd recommend the route via the Western Concourse here, as this is much nearer and should entail less pushing through crowds.

Continue along the main passage, follow the right-hand side, avoiding the pillars, then take the turning right into the central passage. Now follow the left-hand side to the gate line. You can obtain assistance at the check-in point at either end of this gate line. See the Eurostar page for details of the restricted area.

GO TO END

To the First Capital Connect

If you arrive via the Western Concourse, continue (north) to the far end of the concourse and locate the FCC gate line in front of you.

If you arrive via the Northern Concourse:

Continue along the passage and locate the gate line on your right, beyond the National Rail ticket office.

There's a manual gate at each end of this gate line.

Continue (north) from here into a rectangular space, the lift is in the far left-hand corner, the top of the steps are in the far-right, with the escalators to your left of these.

Via the Lifts

See the Lifts Page for more details.

For platform A, southbound, enter the lift facing north, descend to Level -2 then leave via the opposite door and turn left onto the platform, you're about in the middle of the train.

For platform B, northbound, enter the lift facing north, descend to Level -1 then leave via the opposite door. Turn left, continue across the bridge then locate the lift on your left. You enter this lift facing south. Descend to Level -2, then leave via the same door and turn right onto the platform, you're about in the middle of the train.

GO TO END
