THE MARBLE STAIRCASE
The stairs are made of and are surrounded by white Carrera marble, which is white with grey veins. The floors at first and second floor level are also marble, though the third floor is made up of Venetian mosaic tiles showing a wide variety of colours and designs.
This is reputed to be the biggest marble staircase in the world and has been featured in many films.
Having entered the building, continue forward to the reception desk. You will either be required to join one of the public tours of the building or, if you have other business within the building, you'll receive a pass.
Turn left, from Reception and continue, through the short corridor (including a steep ramp), to the foot of the Marble Staircase.
From the ground floor, go up 20 steps, going north, turn left (west) up 12 steps going west, to first floor level.
Turn left (south) following the balustrade, turn left again (east) following the balustrade. There's nothing of public interest at this level.
Turn left (north) beyond the end of the balustrade, go up 21 steps, going north, turn left (west) up 13 steps, going west to second floor level.
Turn left (south) following the balustrade which includes two round pillars turn left (east) and go up 14 steps, going east. Turn left (north), go up 8 then 8 steps, going north and turn left (west) up 14 steps, going west to third floor level.
