CHANGE PLATFORMS

Describe Online

Overview

As the only complete lift route is between the DLR platforms and street level, these directions will be limited to stairs and escalator routes between platforms.

So as not to duplicate information unnecessarily, routes to/from the District Line platforms are included in this section and are not repeated in our guide to Monument Station.

There's tactile paving along the edge of the Central Line, DLR and Waterloo & City Line platforms, but none on the Northern Line platforms in this station, nor on the district Line platforms of Monument Station.

As you face the front of the train, the doors will open:

Note that DLR platform 10 was signed Alighting Only at the time of our survey, so we presume platform 9 is for departing trains.

From Which Platform?

From the Central Line, Platforms 5 - 6
From the Northern Line, Platforms 3 - 4
From the DLR, Platforms 9 - 10
From the Waterloo & City Line, Platforms 7 - 8
From the District Line, Platforms 1 - 2

From the Central Line, Platforms 5 - 6

As you go from the front of westbound (rear of eastbound) trains, the first two gaps are the access to/from the escalators to the Central Line Concourse, the next gap is the west entrance from the Intermediate Level, whilst the fourth gap is the exit to the Intermediate Level.

As you go from the rear of westbound (front of eastbound ) trains, the first gap is the east entrance from the Intermediate Level, the next two turnings are simply gaps between platforms, whilst the fourth gap is the exit to the Intermediate Level. Beyond this is the west entrance from the Intermediate Level followed by the two gaps to/from the escalators to the Central Line Concourse.

Ideally, go into the fourth gap from either end of the train then turn right from platform 5, westbound (left from platform 6, eastbound). Go down two flights of steps, curving clockwise then down a straight flight to the Intermediate Level, turn left and continue past the turning left towards the escalators to the Northern Line Concourse.

To Which Platform?

To the Northern Line, Platforms 3 - 4
To the DLR, Platforms 9 - 10
To the Waterloo & City Line, Platforms 7 - 8
To the District Line, Platforms 1 - 2
To the Northern Line, Platforms 3 - 4

Take the turning left, then turn right and continue forward to the steps, in front of you. We understand you're supposed to keep left, go down a flight of steps to platform level. Platform 3, southbound is to your right, you're near the rear of the train. Platform 4, northbound is to your left, you're near the front of the train.

GO TO END

To the DLR, Platforms 9 - 10

Continue forward to the escalators, with central steps, in front of you. The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need. Go down to platform level, either via the escalator or 14, 3 x 15 then 14 steps. Platform 9 is to your left, we believe you're near the rear of the train.

GO TO END

To the Waterloo & City Line, Platforms 7 - 8

Take the turning right then continue, along a long passage which slopes gently upwards till you reach the left-hand side of platform 7. From here, you can move right onto platform 8. On either platform, continue beyond the end of the barrier along the edge to be near the rear of the train.

GO TO END

To the District Line, Platforms 1 - 2

Although you could go via the Northern Line platforms, I think this could be more crowded and believe the central reservation of the DLR is the intended route. We'll include both sets of directions here, so you can make your own choice.

Via the DLR

Continue forward to the escalators, with central steps, in front of you. The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need. Go down to DLR platform level, either via the escalator or 14, 3 x 15 then 14 steps.

Continue along the central reservation, to the escalators, with central steps, in front of you. The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need. You can go up to the walkway via escalator or 6 x 14 steps.

Continue along the passage, which veers left then right before you reach the second set of escalators, with central steps.

The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need. You can go up to platform level either via the escalator or 13, 4 x 14 then 13 steps.

You're now in the exit area off platform 1, westbound. Turn left (180 degrees) and continue onto the platform, we believe you're about in the middle of the train.

For platform 2, eastbound, turn left and continue into the passage off the end of the platform. You go down two flights of steps, take the turning right, continue under the tracks then turn right and go up two flights of steps onto the platform. We believe you're near the rear of the train.

GO TO END

Via the Northern Line Platforms

Take the turning left, then turn right and continue forward to the steps, in front of you. We understand you're supposed to keep left, go down a flight of steps to platform level. Move left onto platform 4 and continue to the far end. The escalators are in front of you.

The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need. Go up then continue along the passage.

For Platform 1, Westbound

Take the turning right, continue under the tracks then turn left and go up two flights of steps onto the platform. We believe you're near the front of the train.

For Platform 2, Eastbound

The passage veers left before you go up two flights of steps onto the platform. We believe you're near the rear of the train.

GO TO END

Continue, past the passage towards the Waterloo & City Line, on your left, then turn left for the steps. From the District Line, Platforms 1 - 2

The exit towards the Northern Line is beyond the front of westbound trains (platform 1) and behind the rear of eastbound trains (platform 2). Although you could go along either Northern Line platform to reach the Intermediate Level, these platforms may be crowded and this could be a more difficult route than that via the DLR platforms. The exit towards the DLR is about in the middle of platform 1, westbound. We'll therefore give directions via either route so you can make your own choice.

You then pass a series of seats and two pillars in the middle of the platform before you reach the left turn for the exit. This gap is divided into three by two pillars, ideally you should turn into the third gap.

Follow the barrier beside the escalator well on your right then turn back at the end to face the escalators, with central steps.
