ENVIRONS

Describe Online

Location

The station is built into the viaduct running north/south between the South Colonnade (west) on the south side and the North Colonnade (east) on the north.

The station is also an integral part of the large shopping mall and office complex which is shared with the Canary Wharf Underground Station. Although details of the mall itself lie beyond the scope of this survey, we include routes between the DLR and the Underground Station for completeness.

Entrances and Exits

We consider eight entrances/exits to this station. I suppose we could spend time arguing about whether the lifts at Level -1 in the shopping malls or outside the North entrance should be considered as entrances in their own right, but I'm saying that entrances to the station are at Level 0 or 1. This should remove some complexity around which bits of the building constitute part of the station as opposed to its environs. I hope this page helps resolve this issue at least.

The directions in this guide describe routes to/from the following entrances/exits:

The North Entrance

From the pavement, you can go up six then seven steps, going south then continue, between two lift buildings, through the doors into the Ticket Hall.

Alternatively, you can use either lift to reach the North Entrance. If you use the left-hand lift, the call button is to your right of the door, whilst if you use the right-hand lift, the call button is to your left. Go up to Level 0, leave via the other door and continue to the entrance. Note, there's a push button to your right (west) of the entrance doors and an equivalent button to your left (west) as you leave the Ticket Hall.

The rightt-hand (west) lift serves platforms 4 – 5, whilst the left-hand (east) lift serves platforms 2 – 3.

The South Entrance

From the South Collonade you can go up six then seven steps, going north, into the Ticket Hall. Note that there's a push button to your right (east) of the doors and an equivalent button to your left (east) as you leave the Ticket Hall.

Alternatively, you can go up the first slope of the ramp, going west. Turn right (180 degrees, east) then go up the second slope, going east then turn left through the doors, into the Ticket Hall.

The East Level 0 Entrance

There's level access from Level 0 of the East Mall into the Ticket Hall. You go in facing west. Note that there's a push button to your left (south) of the entrance doors and an equivalent button on the right (south) of the doors as you leave the Ticket Hall.

The West Level 0 Entrance

There's level access from Level 0 of the West Mall into the Ticket Hall. You go in facing east. Note that there's a push button to your left (north) of the entrance doors and an equivalent button to your right (north) of the door as you leave the Ticket Hall.

The East Level 1 Entrance

There's level access from Level 1 of the shopping mall onto platform 1, you go through the doors leading west. Note that there's a push button to your left (south) of the entrance doors and an equivalent button to your right (south) as you leave the platform.

The West Level 1 Entrance

There's level access from Level 1 of the shopping mall onto platform 6, you go through the doors leading east. Note that there's a push button to your left (north) of the entrance doors and an equivalent button to your right (north) as you leave the platform.

Local Road Crossings

North Colonnade

There’s a crossing of the North Collonade just west of the station exit. this is a single-stage crossing with tactile paving and sounder. There’s a push button, but no rotating cone to each side as you cross in either direction.

South Colonnade

There's a crossing just east of the South Entrance. This is a single-stage crossing with tactile paving and sounder. There's a post, with push button but no rotating cone, to each side as you cross in either direction.

Local Buses

We understand that the westbound buses are on the South Collonade, whilst the eastbound run along the North Collonade. Unfortunately, we found no bus stops within the scope of our survey.

Local Features

Taxis

We understand there's a taxi rank on the South Collonade, about three minutes walk west from the station, that is turn right from the South Entrance.

The Shopping Mall

This station is an integral part of an extensive shopping mall which also includes Canary Wharf Underground Station. whilst details of this mall lie beyond the scope of this survey, we include this outline to inform routes between the DLR and Underground stations.

Our routes include four levels of this complex:

Level -2, the Ticket Hall Level of the Underground Station

See our guide to Canary Wharf Underground Station for details. The areas of interest to this guide are the East and North exits from which lifts and escalators lead to the shopping mall at Level -1.

Level -1, Shopping Mall Level

A passage leads north from each exit from the Underground Station into a main walkway leading west through an area which we'll call the East Mall, under the DLR Station, to another shopping area which we'll call the West Mall.

The area towards the west side of the East Mall includes an atrium through the 0 and 1 levels. Escalators go up east from about in the middle of this area at Level -1 to Level 0 then west from Level 0 to Level 1. The upper escalators lie south of the lower ones and the left-hand escalator is normally the one you need in each set.

There's a lift in the northwest corner of the East Mall, which serves all levels, including Levels 0 (DLR Ticket Hall) and 1 (DLR Platform 1), which are the only levels relevant to this guide.

The walkway from the East Mall leads under the DLR Station through doors into the West Mall, the door leading south just before these doors leads to another lift to all levels, including Level 0 (DLR Ticket Hall) and 1 (DLR Platform 6) which are the only levels relevant to this guide.

We found no escalators from the West Mall at Level 0 to Level 1 during our survey.

Level 0, DLR Ticket Hall Level, Plus Shopping

This area is divided into three sections: The east Mall, the Ticket Hall and the West Mall.

In the East Mall, the escalators are east of the atrium, whilst the East Entrance to the Ticket Hall and the door towards the lift are on the west side. Note that there's a push button to your left (south) of the doors to the Ticket Hall, whilst the door to the lift (north of the East Entrance) is automatic.

See the Detailed Description section for details of the Ticket Hall.

The West Mall has the doors to the West Entrance and the door to the lift on the east side. Note that there's a push button to your left (north) of the doors to the West Entrance, whilst the door towards the lift (south of the West Entrance) is automatic. The escalators to Level 1 go up east from about in the middle of this space.

Level 1, DLR Platform Level, Plus Shopping

Again, we consider this level in three sections: the East Mall, the DLR platforms and the West Mall.

The East Mall includes the top of the escalators to/from Level 0 east of the atrium, whilst the doors to the Level 1 East Entrance and the lift are on the west side. Note that there's a push button to your left (south) of the doors to the Level 1 East Entrance, whilst the door towards the lift (north of the entrance) is automatic.

See the Detailed Description section for details of the DLR platforms.

The West Mall includes a Tesco metro store round south, west and north sides. Escalators to a sport facility (details of which lie beyond the scope of this survey) are located to either side of the escalators down west to/from Level 0. The doors to the Level 1 West Entrance is on the east side, whilst the door towards the lift is on the south. Note that there's a push button to your left (north) of the doors to the Level 1 West Entrance, whilst the door towards the lift is automatic.

From Canary Wharf Underground Station

See our guide to Our Guide to the Underground Station for more details.

You can leave via the East or North exits via escalator or lift. In either case, you go up from Level -2 to Level -1, turn left (north) and continue to the junction with the main walkway and turn left (west).

Continue west, up the slope, which levels out then up again, then levels out then up again, before you reach the East Mall.

From here, you can go to the Ticket Hall or platform 1 via lift or escalator.

Alternatively, you can continue into the passage, up the slight slope, towards the lift to the Ticket Hall and platform 6.

Via Escalator

As we found no escalators between Levels -1 and 0 of the West Mall, we will restrict these directions to the East Mall.

The escalators to Level 0 go up (towards the Underground Station) from about in the middle of this space. the left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to Level 0. From here, you can turn right then right again for the escalators to Level 1, or turn left towards the Ticket Hall.

To the Ticket Hall

Turn left at the top of the escalator, continue forward a few metres then turn left. You should pass the atrium to your left, continue forward, through the doors in front of you into the Ticket Hall. Note that there's a push button to your left of these doors, whilst the doors towards the lift, to your right of the entrance, are automatic.

To Platform 1

Turn right at the top of the escalator at Level 0, continue across the top of the downward escalator to level -1 then the foot of the downward escalator from Level 1 then turn right for the up escalator (the left-hand one). Go up to Level 1, the atrium is in front of you, we suggest you go round this to your right then continue forward, through the doors onto the platform. Note that there's a push button to your left of these doors, whilst the door towards the lift (to your right of the entrance) is automatic.

Via the Lifts

The door to the lift from the East Mall towards the Ticket Hall and platform 1 is on the far right-hand side as you come from the Underground Station. The lift from the walkway towards the Ticket Hall and platform 6 is probably easier to find. Even if you want to go to platform 1, it may be easier to take this lift to the Ticket Hall then go through the Ticket Hall and leave via the East Entrance as this brings you beside the door towards the lift you need at Level 0.

Continue west, up the slope, turn left (south) through an automatic door, the lift to platform 6 is on the right, the call buttons are to your right of the door.

To the Ticket Hall

Go up to Level 0, leave via the same door then turn left. Go through the door on your left then turn right (180 degrees) for the West Entrance, note that there's a push button to your left of the entrance doors. See the the relevant section of our Change Platforms page for details of the route to platform 1 from here.

To Platform 6

Go up to Level 1, leave via the same door and turn left. Continue through the door in front of you then turn right through the doors onto the platform. Note that there's a push button to your left of the doors onto the platform.
