Lines Served

This is a through station on the Bakerloo, Circle, District and Northern (Charing Cross Branch) lines.

Note that the Circle and District lines share platforms in this station, so all references to the District Line are intended to include the Circle Line.

Layout

This station is established on five levels:

The Concourse, Level 0

The area outside the gates is a rectangular space with the stepped entrance from the Embankment on the south, the step-free entrance from Villiers Street on the north and the gate line along the west side.

The area inside the gates is a T-shaped space. The main leg runs north/south with the stepped exits from the District Line, the gate line and the escalator from the East Passage of the Intermediate Level on the east side. The west side includes the West Passage, plus the escalators to and from the West Passage of the Intermediate Level.

The West Passage leads west towards the stepped entrances to each District Line platform, whilst the escalator to the South Passage of the Intermediate Level leaves from the south side of this passage.

The District Line Platforms 1 - 2, Level -1

These are separate platforms running east/west with platform 1 serving westbound trains towards Victoria and beyond lying south of platform 2 serving eastbound Circle Line trains towards Liverpool Street and King's Cross and District Line trains towards Upminster.

The Intermediate Level, Level -2

This level includes the interconnecting passages between steps to/from the District Line platforms and the escalators to/from the Bakerloo and Northern lines.

The Main Passage, which leads east/west is crossed by three passages (north/south). The East Passage is across the top of the escalators/steps to/from the Northern Line southbound platform 4 to the east. The west side of this passage accesses the east steps to the District Line eastbound platform 2 and the escalator to the Concourse. A passage, which we'll call the South Passage leads east from the escalator from the Concourse, the steps to the District Line westbound platform 1 are reached from the south side of this passage.

The Middle Passage runs between the foot of the steps from each District Line platform. Note that there are five steps down to the Main Passage from either direction.

The east side of the West Passage gives access to the escalator to the Concourse, the west steps to each District Line platform and the escalators to/from the Northern Line northbound platform 3, whilst the west side gives access to the escalators to/from the Level -3 Passage towards the Bakerloo Line platforms 5 - 6. Note that there are three steps up from either side of the Main Passage.

Level -3

This level includes the Northern Line platforms 3 - 4 and the passage leading west from platform 3 towards the Bakerloo Line, which we'll call the Level -3 Passage.

Platform 3 is a separate platform serving northbound trains towards Euston and beyond, whilst platform 4 is a separate platform lying east of platform 3, serving southbound trains towards Waterloo and beyond. Note that these platforms are linked via the Intermediate Level, there being no direct connection at Level -3.

The Level -3 Passage crosses the Bakerloo Line, to the west. There is stairs-only access between this passage and the Bakerloo Line platforms, but there is escalator-only access between this passage and the Intermediate Level.

The Bakerloo Line Platforms 5 - 6, Level -4

These are separate platforms running north/south with platform 5, serving northbound trains towards Baker Street and beyond lying west of platform 6 serving southbound trains towards Waterloo and beyond.

Accessibility

There is no step-free access through this station.

We therefore believe this station is inaccessible to wheelchair users. Guide Dog users can access the District Line and Northern Line southbound platform 4 from the Concourse. There is also stairs-access between the Northern Line northbound platform 3 and the Bakerloo Line platforms 5 - 6. We believe other routes are only accessible whilst relevant escalators are stopped.
