There are help points on each London Underground platform and in the passages through the station. These consist of a circular housing with a glass-protected fire alarm in the centre. Below this is an emergency button and, towards the bottom of the circle is a small button to request information. The speaker is on the left side of the housing. STAIRS There is no step-free, lift or escalator access to this station. There are stairs between the concourse level and both the mainline and London Underground sections of the station. Stairs, including spiral staircases, also connect the two sections of the station directly. PHONES * There is a coin and card phone box immediately on your left as you leave the station via the Seven Sisters Road exit. * There are card and coin phones on the north wall of the north concourse, between the east entrance and the passage to the London Underground section of the station. * There are card and coin phones on the east and south walls of the east concourse. As you leave the London Underground station, those on the south wall are to your right. As you leave the mainline station, continue forwards to locate the phones on the east wall. * There is a card phone on each London Underground platform. PHOTO BOOTH There is a photo booth on the north wall of the north concourse. From the double entrance from Wells Terrace, turn right, the booth is immediately beyond the phones, before you reach the trade stall. TOILETS There are ladies and gents toilets towards the south end of the island platforms 3-4 and 5-6 of the mainline station. On platform 3-4, continue from the top of the stairs, you pass the waiting room on your right. The ladies is in there. The gents is at the far end of the building, follow the wall round to your right and find the entrance on your right. There is a toilet on platforms 5-6, in a similar location though you need to obtain a key from station staff. As we have no authority to survey mainline stations at this time, we can offer no more details at present. VENDING MACHINES There are chocolate vending machines on each London Underground platform. GENERAL DESCRIPTION This is a through station on the London Underground (Piccadilly and Victoria Lines) and the Kings Cross mainline. The service from Moorgate also serves this station. The London Underground station has two island platforms (1 - 2 and 3 - 4), running approximately north/south. These are, from west to east: Platform 1 - Piccadilly Line, northbound, towards Cockfosters Platform 2 - Victoria Line, northbound, towards Walthamstow Central Platform 3 - Piccadilly Line, westbound, towards Heathrow and Uxbridge Platform 4 - Victoria Line, southbound, towards Brixton. The mainline station has three island platforms (1 - 2, 3 -4 and 5 - 6) which lie above those of the London Underground. These are numbered 1 - 6 from east to west (opposite to those of the London Underground). As we have no authority, at this time, to survey mainline stations, the details of these platforms lie beyond the scope of this guide. There are ticket sales areas in the North (Wells Terrace) and east (Station Place) concourses. The east concourse also serves the mainline station. Note, there is no concourse at the Seven Sisters Road entrance. The London Underground station is accessed via a T-shaped passage. The top of the T runs approximately north/south between the Wells Terrace and the Seven sisters Road entrance; whilst the upright of the T, from which you access the platforms, runs from the east concourse. There are two ways from this passage onto each island platform. As it was not clear from the existing signage, which was the entrance and, since we observed people using each in both directions, we shall call them the "south" and "north" ways. Note that the south ways emerge near the end of the platform and, therefore are probably easier to locate as you leave a train. The passage to the mainline station leaves from the northwest corner of the east concourse. As you face the ticket sales window, turn right, go to the wall at the end of the concourse and turn left. Follow this wall to locate the stairs on your right and turn left at the top. There is a set of stairs on the left side of this passage leading up to each of the three island platforms for the mainline, bringing you near the south end of the platforms. There is a set of spiral stairs on the right leading down to each of the two island platforms for the London Underground station; bringing you to about the middle of the platform. © 2001 Terry Robinson DETAILED DESCRIPTION East Concourse North Concourse Passage to Underground Station Passage to Mainline Station Platform1, Piccadilly Line, Northbound Platform 2, Victoria Line, Northbound Platform 3, Piccadilly Line, Westbound Platform 4, Victoria Line, Southbound © 2001 Terry Robinson THE NORTH CONCOURSE There are two entrances, one from the passage to the London Underground station, the other (east entrance), is from Wells Terrace. HOW DO I...? Find a London Underground Platform from an Entrance Find an Exit from a London Underground Platform Find a Mainline Platform from an Entrance Find an Exit from a Mainline Platform Change from London Underground to Mainline Change from Mainline to London Underground Change Platforms - London Underground Change Platforms - Mainline © 2001 Terry Robinson FIND A LONDON UNDERGROUND PLATFORM FROM AN ENTRANCE The following directions will bring you into the passage nearest the end of the platform. Note that, alternatively, you could take the stairs on the opposite side of the passage which will bring you a few metres along the platforms. From the East Concourse This concourse lies alongside the Station Place bus station. There are three entrances into the concourse; one at each end (narrow sides) and the other in the longer side, adjacent to the bus station. You need to find the passage to the London Underground station which leaves the concourse from the opposite side to that adjacent to the bus station. Having entered the concourse, face away from the bus station. There is a ticket sales booth in the far left hand corner, the passage you need is just to your right of this. Enter the passage, which slopes downwards with a metal rail along the middle. * for the westbound Piccadilly or southbound Victoria lines, platforms 3 - 4, turn left at the foot of the slope and go down two flights of stairs. Platform 3, Piccadilly line, Westbound is on your right; Platform 4, Victoria Line, is on your left. You're at the front of the train. * For the Northbound Piccadilly and Victoria lines, platforms 1 - 2, continue along the passage which slopes upwards again. Turn left at the top of the slope and go down two flights of stairs. Platform 1, Piccadilly line is on your right; Platform 2, Victoria Line on your left. You're at the rear of the train. From the Seven Sisters Road entrance, continue till you locate the passage on your right. From the Wells Terrace entrance, continue, down the slope, (there is a metal rail along the middle of this passage(, and locate the passage on your left. Enter this passage. * If you want the northbound Piccadilly and Victoria lines, platforms 1 - 2, continue along the passage and take the first turning right. If you find a downward slope, you've overshot. Go down two flights of stairs. Platform 1, Piccadilly Line, is on your right; Platform 2, Victoria Line on your left. You're at the rear of the train. * If you want the westbound Piccadilly or southbound Victoria Line, continue down the slope and turn right at the bottom. If you find the passage sloping upwards, you've overshot. Go down two flights of stairs. Platform 3, Piccadilly Line westbound, is on your right; platform 4, Victoria Line, southbound, is on your left. You're at the front of the train. FIND AN EXIT FROM A LONDON UNDERGROUND PLATFORM The following directions take you via the passage nearest the end of the platforms, as this will probably be the easiest to identify. There are several passages running through each island between platforms. Two of these lead to exits and another to the mainline station. The rest merely join the two platforms. The important things to note are: * As you go up the stairs; if you're going towards the front of the train, southbound (rear of the train, northbound), you'll need to reverse the direction in which I advise you to turn when you reach the passage. I've got lost here many times before I surveyed the station! * If you're on a spiral staircase, you're heading for the mainline. Don't despair, you can turn left at the top, go to the end of the passage before turning right, down 12 steps into the east concourse. * If you're unlucky enough to find a blank passage, just go through and follow the directions below. From the Northbound Piccadilly, the doors open on your right as you face the front of the train; you get out onto platform 1. From the Northbound Victoria Line, the doors open on your left as you face the front of the train; you get out onto platform 2. Go to the rear of the train and locate the last passage from the platform. Enter this and take the stairs up to your left (Piccadilly), or right (Victoria). Go up two flights of stairs to reach the passage. From the westbound Piccadilly, the doors open on your left as you face the front of the train; you get out onto platform 3. From the southbound Victoria, the doors open on your right as you face the front of the train; you get out onto platform 4. Go to the front of the train and locate the last passage from the platform. Enter this and take the stairs up to your left (Piccadilly), or right (Victoria). Go up two flights of stairs to reach the passage. Having reached the passage: turn right for the east concourse (Station Place bus station); turn left, continue to the end of the passage and turn left again for the Seven Sisters Road exit; turn left, continue to the end of the passage and turn right, up the slope, for the Wells Terrace exit. FIND A MAINLINE PLATFORM FROM AN ENTRANCE You access the mainline platforms from the east concourse. So: From the Seven sisters Road entrance, continue along the passage and take the turning on your right; From the Wells Terrace entrance, continue, down the slope and take the turning on your left, at the foot of the slope. Go along the passage, down and up the slope, into the east concourse, then turn left. Continue, past the ticket sales windows, to the wall at the end of the concourse, then turn left into the passage. The east concourse lies adjacent to Station Place bus station. There are three entrances to this concourse, one at each end (narrow sides) and another next to the bus station. As you face away from the bus station, you need to locate the passage which leaves from the far right hand corner of the concourse. There are ticket sales windows to your left as you face this passage. Enter the passage and go up either of the two sets of stairs to your right, before turning left again at the top. Follow the left hand side of this passage to locate stairs to the mainline island platforms 1-2, 3-4, then 5-6. You go up two flights of stairs onto each island platform, near the south end of the islands. FIND AN EXIT FROM A MAINLINE PLATFORM As we have no permission to survey mainline stations at this time, the details of these platforms are beyond the scope of this guide. However, you need to head towards the south end of each island platform. The stair well is surrounded by distinctive metal railings through which the stairs leave from the south side. So, you go down two flights of stairs into the passage and turn right towards the east concourse. At the end of the passage, turn right, down 12 steps, then left and right again into the concourse. Station Place bus station is to your left here. For the Seven Sisters Road and Wells Terrace exits, continue forward and take the passage on your right, just before the London Underground ticket sales booth in the corner of the concourse. Follow the passage, down a slope, then up again, to the end. Turn left, for the Seven sisters Road exit; right and up the slope, for Wells Terrace. CHANGE FROM LONDON UNDERGROUND TO MAINLINE The exits from the London Underground platforms towards the mainline are located in the second passage from the front of the northbound (rear of the southbound) trains. * From the northbound Piccadilly Line, the doors open on your right as you face the front of the train. You get out onto platform 1. * From the northbound Victoria Line, the doors open on your left as you face the front of the train, you get out onto platform 2. Go towards the front of the train to locate the second passage from the end of the platform. Enter this passage and take the turn right (Piccadilly), or left (Victoria). Go up three flights of spiral stairs into the passage which serves the mainline platforms. * From the westbound Piccadilly Line, the doors open on your left as you face the front of the train, you get out onto platform 3. * from the southbound Victoria line, the doors open on your right as you face the front of the train, you get out onto platform 4. Go towards the rear of the train and locate the second passage from the end of the platform. Enter this and take the turning right (Piccadilly) or left (Victoria). Go up three flights of spiral stairs to reach the passage which serves the mainline platforms. The stairs to the mainline platforms leave from the opposite side of the passage. There are three sets of stairs, from left/right, these serve platforms 1 - 2, 3-4 and 5-6. You go up two flights of stairs onto the platform, near the south end of the island. CHANGE FROM MAINLINE TO LONDON UNDERGROUND As we have no permission to survey mainline stations at this time, the details of these platforms are beyond the scope of this guide. However, you need to head towards the south end of each island platform. The stair well is surrounded by distinctive metal railings through which the stairs leave from the south side. So, you go down two flights of stairs into the passage. The stairs to the London Underground leave from the opposite side of the passage so that those to the northbound, platforms 1 - 2, are to your left of those to platforms 3 - 4. If there's no-one about, it may be worth going to one end of the passage and coming back again to be sure you've found the right stairs as there are no distinguishing marks en route between the two. * for the Northbound, platforms 1 - 2, go down three flights of spiral stairs and continue to the passage between the platforms. Platform 1, Piccadilly Line northbound, is on your left; platform 2, Victoria Line is on your right, you're about in the middle of the train. * for the southbound, platforms 3 - 4, go down three flights of spiral stairs and continue to the passage between the platforms. Platform 3, Piccadilly Line westbound, is on your left; platform 4, Victoria Line southbound is on your right, you're about in the middle of the train. CHANGE PLATFORMS - LONDON UNDERGROUND The two island platforms are connected via the passage to the London Underground and also by that for the mainline station. However, it's easier to use the London Underground route. There are two exits from each island platform to the London Underground passage, I have referred to these as the "south" and "north" passages. The south passage is easiest to identify, being the first passage you find from the front (westbound Piccadilly or southbound Victoria), or rear (northbound) of the train. If you've found the north passage, simply reverse the directions which follow. * From the northbound, platforms 1 - 2, go to the rear of the train and locate the first passage. Enter this and take the turning on your left (Piccadilly), or right (Victoria). Go up two flights of stairs to the London Underground passage and turn right. Take the turning on your right and descend two flights of stairs to the passage between the platforms. Platform 3, Piccadilly Line westbound is on your right, platform 4, Victoria Line southbound is on your left; you're at the front of the train. * From the westbound Piccadilly or southbound Victoria, platforms 3 - 4, go to the front of the train and locate the first passage. Enter this and take the turning on your left (Piccadilly), or right (Victoria). Go up two flights of stairs to the London Underground passage and turn left. Take the turning on your left and descend two flights of stairs to the passage between the platforms. Platform 1, Piccadilly Line northbound is on your right, platform 2, Victoria Line is on your left; you're at the rear of the train. CHANGE PLATFORMS - MAINLINE As we have no permission to survey mainline stations, the details of these platforms are beyond the scope of this guide. However, the stairs down to the passage for the mainline station are towards the south end of the platforms. The stair well is surrounded by distinctive metal railings with the stairs entering from the south side of the well. You go down two flights of stairs into the passage for the mainline. At the bottom, turn left for higher numbered platforms, right for lower. There are three island platforms in this station.
