FIND AN EXIT FROM A PLATFORM

Overview

Perhaps the quietest route out of this station would be via one of the Old Broad Street entrances, where you'd bypass the crowded Network Rail concourse.

For Liverpool Street Mainline Station, you'd normally leave the Underground station via the steps up from the concourse from all platforms, though between 07:00 and 20:30 Monday to Friday, you could reach the mainline station from the Central Line via either of the exits beside the mainline platforms. We see little sense in using these exits from the Circle, Hammersmith & City or Metropolitan lines, though it could be done, via two escalator journeys.

From the Central Line

The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train. There is no tactile paving along the edge of these platforms.

Via the Underground Concourse

From the eastbound (platform 4) go towards the rear of the train, ideally go through the second passage from the end of the platform and turn right towards the escalators.

From the westbound (platform 5), go towards the front of the train and, ideally, go through the first passage from the end of the platform and turn left towards the escalators.

The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to concourse level, turn left and follow the left-hand side to the gate line. The Wide Aisle Gate is at the left-hand end of the gate line, next to the automatic exits. Go through the gates, bear right (about 1 o'clock), continue forward and go up ten steps into the Network Rail concourse.

BAK TO TOP

For the Old Broad Street Exits

From the eastbound (platform 4) go towards the rear of the train, ideally go through the second passage from the end of the platform and turn right towards the escalators.

From the westbound (platform 5), go towards the front of the train and, ideally, go through the first passage from the end of the platform and turn left towards the escalators.

The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need, go up to concourse level, turn left and follow the right-hand side to locate the steps up to the west bridge. You should pass one set of downward steps before you reach these.

Go up three flights of steps, turn right and go up another flight of steps to street level. From here you can turn right for the north entrance or left for the south, into the arcade. In either case, the left-hand gates are normally the ones you need.

Via the North Concourse

From the eastbound (platform 4) go towards the rear of the train, ideally go through the third passage from the end of the platform and turn left towards the escalators.

From the westbound (platform 5), go towards the front of the train and, ideally, go through the third passage from the end of the platform and turn right towards the escalators.

Alternatively, you can go to the opposite end of the platform and use the north escalators, in which case, you reverse the following directions as necessary.

In either case, the right-hand escalator is normally the one you need.

If you used the first set of escalators (opposite those from the Underground concourse), go up to concourse level, turn right at the top and continue to the gates in front of you. the automatic exit gates are generally to your right, whilst the manual gate is at the left-hand end of this gate line. Go through the gates.

For Platform 1, turn right, go up two flights of steps then turn left, go up another flight of steps and continue onto the concourse. The entrance to platform 1 is to your left.

For higher platforms, turn left, go up two flights of steps then turn right and go up another flight of steps and continue into the concourse, the entrance to platform 8 is to your right, whilst that for platform 9 is to your left.

From the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines

The doors will open on your left as you face the front of the train. There is some tactile paving along the edge of these platforms, but not as distinct as the modern variety.

From the Westbound, Platform 1

There are four sets of steps going up from this platform:

We therefore suggest you move towards the front of the train (not too far) and go up either set of steps onto the west bridge.

If you're going in the opposite direction to the train, go up one flight of steps then turn left, otherwise, go up two flights of eight steps and turn right.

If you now go up four steps, you're on the central bridge, you may as well continue anyway, down two flights of steps into the Underground Concourse, turn left and continue towards the far end of the gate line on your right.

If you go up ten steps, you're on the west bridge, from here you can turn left towards the Old Broad Street exits, or continue down three flights of steps into the Underground concourse.

For the Old Broad Street Exits

Go up a flight of steps, to street level. From here you can turn either right, towards the north exit, or left into the arcade. In either case, the left-hand gates are normally the ones you need.

For the Underground Concourse

Continue forward, the automatic exit gates are generally in front of you, though the manual gate is at the right-hand end of this gate line. If you go through the automatic gates, bear right (1 o'clock, otherwise continue forward, up ten steps into the Network Rail concourse.

From the Eastbound, Platform 2

There are three sets of three steps between this platform and the Underground concourse. We understand the middle one of these is the preferred exit, as it's almost in line with the automatic exit gates and is at the foot of the steps onto the west bridge, towards the Old Broad Street exits

For the Old Broad Street Exits

Locate the steps leading in the opposite direction to the train, these will take you onto the west bridge. Go up a flight of steps, turn left and go up another flight of steps before turning right. Go up a flight of steps, to street level. From here you can turn iether right, towards the north exit, or left into the arcade. In either case, the left-hand gates are normally the ones you need.

For the Underground Concourse

Go up the middle set of steps and continue forward, the automatic exit gates are generally in front of you, though the manual gate is at the right-hand end of this gate line. If you go through the automatic gates, bear right (1 o'clock, otherwise continue forward, up ten steps into the Network Rail concourse.
