Lines Served

This is a through station on the Circle, Hammersmith & City Metropolitan and Northern (City Branch) lines which pass east/west through the station. It is also the terminus for some Metropolitan Line trains.

The station is the London terminus for First Capital Connect (FCC) services to Stevenage and bedford.

Layout

The station is established on five levels:

  1. Street Level, this includes the Metropolitan Line concourse and bridge.
  2. The Lower concourse plus the Metropolitan Line and FCC Bedford platforms 1 - 6.
  3. The FCC Stevenage platforms 9 - 10.
  4. The passages between the foot of the escalators from the lower concourse and steps to the Northern Line platforms 7 - 8.
  5. The Northern Line platforms 7 - 8.

Level 1, Street Level

The Metropolitan Line concourse, which is reached from Moorfields, is a rectangular space divided into two by the gate line running north/south. The area inside the gates is the bridge, offering stairs access to the Eastbound (platform 1) and the westbound (platform 2) and terminus platforms 3 - 6.

Level 2

The Lower Concourse

There is stairs access from street level to the lower concourse via the middle and east entrances.

The lower concourse is an irregular shaped space. The area inside the gates is divided into two distinct sections, connected by a short passage running east/west. The eastern section includes the top of the escalators between this level and level 3, whilst the western section includes the stairs access to levels 3 and 5, plus the escalators between this level and level 4.

Each section has a gate line occupying two sides of a rectangle around the heads of the escalators and stairs.

The area outside the gates includes the subway under Moorgate leading off to the east plus an irregular space outside the gate lines. The ticket sales facilities are on the north side of this area, between the two gate lines.

Platforms 1 - 6

This section of the station can be reached via steps from the bridge, or via steps from the subway leading west from the lower concourse. We understand that it will also be reached via escalators from level 3 when refurbishment of these escalators is complete.

Platform 1 is a separate platform (east/west) along the north side of the station, serving eastbound Circle, Hammersmith & city and Metropolitan Line trains.

The other platforms at this level also run east/west. Platform 2, which shares an island platform with platform 3, serves westbound Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Line trains. In the interest of brevity, our reference to Metropolitan Line services relating to platforms 1 and 2 will be assumed to include Circle and Hammersmith & City Line services.

Platforms 2 - 3 and 4 - 5 are island platforms, whilst platform 6 is a separate platform along the south side of the station.

Platforms 3 - 4 are termini for Metropolitan Line services, whilst 5 - 6 are termini for the FCC Bedford service.

Level 3

This level consists of the island platform 9 - 10, which runs east/west.

This level can be reached via escalator or stairs from the lower concourse, or via escalator from level 5. We understand it will also be reached from platform 1, via escalator when the refurbishment is complete.

Note that the stairs access is to the east end of platform 10, whilst the escalator access is to the east end of platform 9. We believe that the access to platform 1 will be towards the west end of the island platform.

Platform 9 lies south of platform 10. These platforms are termini for the FCC Stevenage service.

There is no tactile paving along the edge of these platforms.

Level 4

This consists of the two passages running north/south between the foot of the escalators from the lower concourse and the steps to/from platforms 7 - 8 at level 5. Note that the entrance passage lies east of the exit.

Level 5

This consists of the island platform 7 - 8 which runs east/west.

This level can be reached from the lower concourse via stairs or via escalator and stairs. Both entrances are towards the east end of the platforms, whilst the exit is about in the middle. West of this is a single escalator exit to level 3.

These are through platforms for the Northern Line (City Branch), with platform 7, northbound lying south of platform 8, southbound.

There is no tactile paving along the edge of these platforms.

Accessibility

There is stairs access throughout this station. We therefore believe the station is accessible to Guide Dog users, but not to wheelchairs.
