FIND AN EXIT FROM A PLATFORM

DESCRIBE ONLINE

Overview

This station has an island platform with a central reservation joined to the intermediate level by escalators. The central reservation has three sections. The middle section, at the foot of the escalators, is at a higher level than the two end sections which are at platform level. Two gaps give access between the platforms through each of these end sections. The directions given in this page follow those indicated by the signage which promotes an orderly traffic flow through the station.

The lift is on the westbound, platform 1, at the rear of the train.

The doors will open on your right as you face the front of the train and there's a barrier along the platform edge with doors which are only open whilst a train is standing at the platform.

Which Route?

  Via Escalator
Via Lift

Via Escalator

From the Westbound, Platform 1

You should, ideally, take either the first gap from the rear of the train or the second from the front, into the central reservation.

If you've left near the rear of the train, turn left, go up a flight of steps then turn left towards the escalators. Go up to the intermediate level.

If you've left near the front of the train, turn right, go up a flight of steps then continue to the top of the steps in front of you and turn right towards the escalators. Go up to the intermediate level.

From the Eastbound, Platform 2

Ideally, you should leave via the first gap from either end of the platform into the central reservation.

If you left near the rear of the train, turn left, go up a flight of steps then continue to the top of the steps in front of you and turn right towards the escalators. Go up to the intermediate level.

If you left near the front of the train, turn right, go up a flight of steps then turn left towards the escalators. Go up to the intermediate level.

The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need. At the intermediate level, you can turn left and continue up another escalator into the east concourse, or turn right and go up either an escalator or stairs towards Waterloo East Station.

To Which Exit

  To the East Concourse
To Waterloo East Station
To the East Concourse

At the top of the escalator to the intermediate level, turn left and continue up the escalator in front of you into the east concourse. Bear slightly right to reach the exit gates, there's a manual gate at each end of the exit section in this gate line. Go through the gates and continue, up two flights of steps to street level. See the Environs page for details of this exit.

GO TO END

To Waterloo East Station

At the top of the escalator to the intermediate level, turn right and continue along the passage until you reach either the steps or escalators in front of you. The steps are to the left of the escalators and the left-hand escalator is normally the one you need.

If you use the steps, you go up 4 x 18 steps into the west concourse. As you reach the west concourse, the exit gates are in front of you, though the manual gate is at the right-hand end of the gate line. Go through the gates, continue to the wall in front of you then turn right into Waterloo East Station.

GO TO END

Via Lift

From the Westbound, Platform 1

The lift is in a recess at the rear of the train. Enter this recess and locate the door to the lift on your left.

From the Eastbound, Platform 2

The signage indicates the wheelchair exit is the gap into the central reservation nearest the rear of the train. Go through this gap, onto platform 1, turn left and continue to the other end of the platform, into the recess at the end. Locate the door to the lift on your left.

See the lifts page for details of the lifts in this station.

Go up to "Ticket Hall" level. You leave via the same doors, turn right and go through the door at the end of the short passage into the concourse then follow the left-hand wall towards the exit gates. There's a manual gate at each end of this section of the gate line. Go through the gates.

Turn left and locate the short passage to the lift to street level, in front of you. Go to street level and leave, via the other doors, into Blackfriars Road.
