Overview

There is lift and escalator access to the island platform from the east concourse, but escalator-only access from Waterloo East Station, via the west concourse.

There's a barrier along each platform with doors which are only open whilst a train is standing at the platform.

From Which Entrance

From the East Concourse Via Escalator

From street level, go down two flights of steps into the concourse. The ticket sales windows are on the left-hand wall and the entrance gates are the left-hand section of the gate line. There's a manual gate at each end of this section of the gate line.

Go through the gates and veer right then left towards the escalators, the left-hand escalator is normally the one you need. Go down to the intermediate level, follow the right-hand side then take the third turning on your right towards the downward escalator. Note that the escalators from this section of the station are separated by a section of wall. Go down the escalator, you're in the central reservation of the island platform, 14 ssteps above platform level.

Our understanding of the signage suggests that you should turn left at the foot of the escalator, go down a flight of steps then take the first turning left for the westbound platform 1, you're near the front of the train. Otherwise, take the second (last) turning right for the eastbound, platform 2, you're near the rear of the train.

GO TO END

From the West Concourse Via Escalator

From Waterloo East Station, leave the subway to the left of the steps from platform D then turn left. The ticket sales window is on the left-hand wall and the manual and automatic entrance gates are in front of you. Go through the gates.

The escalators and steps to the intermediate level are in front of you. The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need and the steps (4 x 18) are to your right of the escalators. Go down to the intermediate level and follow the left-hand side then take the first turning left towards the downward escalator. Note that the escalators in this section of the station are separated by a section of wall. Go down the escalator, you're in the central reservation of the island platform, 14 ssteps above platform level.

GO TO END

From the East Concourse Via Lift

As you face the curved front of the building, move to your right, into Blackfriars Road and locate the lift door on your left. See the lifts page for details of lifts in this station.

Go down to ticket hall level, you're in the east concourse. Leave the lift via the other doors and continue forward to the wall in front of you then turn right. The ticket sales windows are on the left-hand side of the concourse and the entrance gates are in front of you with a manual gate at each end of this section of the gate line.

Go through the gates, turn right and go through the door (virtually in front of you) into the passage towards the lift. The lift door is on your left, near the end of this passage.

Go down to platform level, leave via the same doors and turn right onto platform 1, westbound, towards the rear of the train.

For the eastbound, platform 2, turn right, take the first turning right and continue across the central reservation onto platform 2, you're near the front of the train.
