THE NORTHERN LINE PLATFORMS

Overview

This is an island platform running south with platform 3, northbound lying west of platform 4, southbound.

In order to maintain a clockwise flow of traffic, the normal entrance is via the north end of platform 4, southbound, whilst the exit is via the north end of platform 3, northbound.

The central reservation comprises a passage across the north end of the platforms, a second passage, which is an entrance route from platform 4 onto platform 3 and the area at the foot of the exit escalator, about in the middle of the platforms.

At the Foot of the Exit Escalator

There are three gaps into this area from each platform. The escalator to the south spur of the intermediate level, leaves from the north side, whilst there is fire equipment and an emergency phone on the south wall of this space.

The First, North Passage

This is beyond (north of) the end of the platforms and includes:

South Side, Going West

passage to platform 4
passage to platform 3

North Side, Going West

entrance steps from the escalator at the lower level

exit steps to lower level

There is no tactile paving along the edge of these platforms.

To Reach

Turn left (180 degrees) at the foot of the escalators from the main concourse and continue (east) down the escalator, the left-hand escalator is normally the one you need.

Continue (east) from the foot of the escalator, through normally open gates, down nine steps, going east. Turn right (south), go down 14 steps going south and continue onto platform 4, southbound. A metal rail runs from the beginning of the platform to the rear of the train.

For the northbound, platform 3, take the next passage on your right. You are near the front of the train.

To Leave

There are four recognised exit routes from these platforms:

To leave platform 4, ideally go through the second passage of the central reservation, onto platform 3 then turn right.
From the North end of platform 3, continue north, up 20 steps, going north, to the foot of the escalator to the intermediate level. Turn left and go up west to the intermediate level. The left-hand escalator is normally the one you need. Turn right then right again for the escalator to the main concourse, again, the left-hand escalator is normally the one you need.
Alternatively, turn left (west) at the top of the 20 steps and go up 17, then 17 steps, going west to the intermediate level. You're near the beginning of the south spur, turn right towards the escalators, or right then left towards the Central Line.
From the central reservation, take the escalator up north, into the south spur of the intermediate level. Follow the passage, which curves left then back right north. Continue forwards into the rectangular area at the foot of the escalators to the main concourse.
